Robert DeNiro leaves Manhattan Supreme Court after testifying in the trial of Leigh Morse..Robert DeNiro was no raging bull on the witness stand Friday.
The star was calm, cool and collected as he testified against a gallery director accused of pocketing $77,000 from the sale of his father's paintings.
The "Taxi Driver" actor gave short, straightforward answers as he was questioned by the prosecutor and the lawyer for defendant Leigh Morse.
He talked about how his relationship with Salander-O'Reilly Galleries disintegrated during two European shows of his father's work.
He said gallery owner Lawrence Salander chartered two planes to fly them to Portugal for an opening and "it just didn't add up to me."
A lavish red-carpet opening in Rome sparked more suspicions and he learned that Salander had given some of DeNiro Sr.'s works to the gallery to pay off debts.
Morse's lawyer contends that the $77,000 she kept from the sale of the dad's paintings was just a bookkeeping trick to cover $400,000 in owed commissions from other sales.
The actor would have gotten the money eventually, the lawyer suggested.
Prosecutor Micki Shulman asked DeNiro if he was OK with a system based on commissions and he replied, "If it's all kosher."
Asked how he felt about a dealer using his money to pay off an unrelated debt to herself, DeNiro made it clear that's not kosher.
"That I have an issue with," he said.
