Michael Lohan has had a rocky relationship with daughter Lindsay Lohan for years.

Dina Lohan may be in support of daughter Lindsay's decision to drop her famous surname, but not surprisingly, her dad, Michael, has a few choice words for his family.

"At the outset, it hurts to hear something like that, but at the end of the day, it's never going to happen," Michael Lohan tells the Daily News. "It's a real shame Dina would make up this kind of story.

"From the time she came out to California, she's tried to put a wedge between Lindsay and me," he adds. "Every time she comes around, she tries to put a wedge, and it's only harmful to Lindsay and the children. This family needs therapy."

On Friday, Dina Lohan told PopEater.com that the troubled actress is "is dropping the Lohan and just going by Lindsay."

"Me and [Lindsay's sister] Ali will be officially changing our last names back to my maiden name, Sullivan," Dina Lohan added, but made no mention of whether her two other children, sons Michael and Cody, also will be changing their names.

Lindsay Lohan, 24, has apparently been debating changing her name in the past but didn't begin to seriously consider it until the 2010 Super Bowl E-Trade commercial that referenced a baby as "that milkaholic Lindsay."

The starlet filed a lawsuit over the ad, claiming the character was based on her. The popular ad reportedly had made her realize that her first name alone was enough for people to identify her. An undisclosed settlement was reached in September.

"So many of the greatest people in showbiz are known by just their first name. Look at Oprah and Beyonc. Now you can add Lindsay to that list," a Lohan source told PopEater.

"And it's a way for them all to start over," the source added. "No one in the family wants anything to do with Lindsay's father anymore, and that includes sharing a last name."

Michael Lohan, who was arrested earlier this week after an alleged physical dispute with his ex-fiance, Kate Major, begs to differ, however

"I'm proud of the Lohan name. It's a name of integrity," he says. "We all had very successful jobs on Wall Street. My father was an unbelievable provider. My sisters are pillars of the community. There's not a blemish in my family outside of me."

Besides the father's frequent run-ins with the law, Lindsay Lohan has had her fair share of legal troubles in the past few years.

The actress, who landed in jail twice last year over probation violations stemming from her back-to-back DUI arrests in 2007, was charged with felony grand theft for allegedly swiping a $2,500, one-of-a-kind necklace from a Venice, Calif., jeweler on Jan. 22. Prosecutors first offered six months' jail and three years' felony probation for a public mea culpa, sources told the Daily News.

But when the "Mean Girls" star turned them down, the judge signaled he'd whittle the jail sentence down to three months behind bars, TMZ.com reported.

She rejected the sweetened plea bargain on Wednesday and will fight to clear her name. Her next stop now is a preliminary hearing in front of a different judge April 22.
