New York's Broadway lights will be dimmed in tribute to Dame Elizabeth Taylor tonight (25.03.11).

Theatre marquees will see their lights turned down at 8pm local time - the traditional curtains-up time for shows - for one minute, with The Broadway League highlighting her "tireless" commitment to AIDS charities and acting excellence.

Chairman of the group Paul Libin said in a statement: "With her remarkable talent and extraordinary beauty, Elizabeth Taylor lit up the Broadway stage the same way she lit up the silver screen.

Off stage, her tireless commitment to fighting AIDS as a co-founder of amfAR and founder of The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation added yet another meaningful role to the story of her life

"Off stage, her tireless commitment to fighting AIDS as a co-founder of amfAR and founder of The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation added yet another meaningful role to the story of her life. Our thoughts go out to her friends, family, and fans, all of those who loved her."

As well as her acclaimed Hollywood roles, which include 'Cleopatra' and 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof', Elizabeth often worked on Broadway, winning a Tony Award for Best Actress in 1981 for 'The Little Foxes'.

She also produced and starred in Noel Coward's 'Private Lives' with her former husband Richard Burton in 1983, a year before he died.

The screen icon died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles aged 79 on Wednesday (23.03.11).
