Redheaded mamas with similarly genetically blessed female offspring, get your little girls ready. The casting directors of Broadway?s upcoming Annie revival want a look at your singing, dancing daughter to play their young lead. (Blonds and brunettes, they?d like to see your kids too, but for the lesser-known orphan roles.) Can?t get to NYC on June 12 for the open call tryouts? This is also the first time a Broadway production will accept online audition submissions. So charge that Flip camera (hands off the Botox) and get to work on the red dress.
Those without stargazing 6- to 12-year-olds, let?s ponder: While we are always proud of Hollywood when it passes on the chance to exploit children and parents, isn?t there the missed opportunity for a reality show tucked somewhere in here? It could be Toddlers & Tiaras-meets-Glee,with a mega payoff: Broadway stardom. Think of it: stage moms and dads, with dreams of having the next Sarah Jessica Parker (pictured, as Annie in 1979) under their roofs, succumbing to all sorts of pressures. Who will dye his/her daughter?s hair red and who will use a wig? Will the natural gingers win out? Can ?Tomorrow? be belted out Aguilera-style? Extra points for tattooed freckles and having your own failed acting aspirations. It could be inspiring. It could be weird and twisted. It could be featured on The Soup.
Don?t you remember 2007?s Grease: You?re the One That I Want!, which aired on NBC and cast Sandy and Danny for that show?s most recent Broadway revival? The musical only played 554 performances and closed after 16 months ? and Danny pick Max Crumm has yet to return to the Great White Way. But 11.6 million people watched the reality show?s premiere that January, which scored NBC?s highest ratings in three years among 18- to 49-year-olds for a non-sports show. Laura Osnes, the winner cast as Sandy, is still appearing on Broadway and is currently in the Tony-nominated Anything Goes. And let?s not forget the BBC?s success with those Andrew Lloyd Webber competition shows in which he cast the stars of West End musical reboots: How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? (Maria in The Sound of Music), Any Dream Will Do (Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat), I?d Do Anything (Nancy and Oliver in Oliver!), and Over the Rainbow (Dorothy and Toto in The Wizard of Oz). Toto! Speaking of which, I know a terrier, who, with a few added pounds, highlights, and maybe some growth hormones, would make the perfect Sandy. Annie producers, expect a video soon.
