Bono: Bad 'Spider-Man' reviews were right
As everyone knows, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark just returned to Broadway after its cast and creative team spent three weeks revamping a musical that had been savaged by the press ? before even opening.
But U2's Bono, who wrote the music and lyrics with bandmate the Edge, isn't sore at the pundits who helped create extra work for them.
The Hollywood Reporter reveals that in an interview airing on Nightline tonight, the U2 frontman tells Cynthia McFadden he "(doesn't) disagree" with a particularly snarky review that ran in The New York Times: "That's the sort of stuff we were saying backstage."
Original director Julie Taymor, since deposed, did disagree, but Bono says that Taymor ? whom he and Edge praise ? "got very close to it, so close, perhaps, that she didn't see?what we thought were the problems."
Edge adds of the show ? set to officially open June 14, with a considerably revised book ? "If it's a big success, I think it serves everybody involved and Julie as well, because, you know, this show is so much about the contributions she made."
