AWARENESS: TARIQ NASHEED?S ?HIDDEN COLORS? NOW ON DVD + TRAILER
David Letterman Goes Off on Donald Trump
David Letterman was joking around with Dr. Phil last night, only he wasn't really joking when it came to Donald Trump's criticism of President Obama.
He began by asking Phil about Trump, and Phil didn't really bite. What Dave was really doing was giving himself his own segue to lay into the Donald.
Dave said, flat-out, that beyond the birth certificate, Trump's questioning of Obama - how he got into Harvard, how he wrote his memoirs - is racist.
David Letterman Goes Off on Donald Trump
“It smacks of racism,” said Letterman, noting that while it's all a giant media circus to a degree, “Nobody should be amused by that tactic.”
Trying to diffuse things, Dr. Phil said he doesn’t think Trump “has a racist bone in his body," but rather "just doesn’t think things through.”
Dave scoffed and said if Trump returns to The Late Show - “and I’m not sure that we want him back” - he “ought to be prepared to apologize.”
Trump denied he's racist yesterday, following a similar calling out by CBS News' Bob Schieffer over the mogul's remarks about Obama's grades.
A possible White House candidate in 2012, Trump said he was making a broader point about the President's lack of transparency about his past.
Whether or not you think Donald is out of line, it's nice to see a host not cozying up to celebs by default and actually offering a strong opinion.
Don't you agree? And what do you think about Trump? Racist?

Bridal bouquet proves Kate Middleton knows how to keep William sweet!
Kate Middleton carried a simple bouquet of flowers
Kate Middletonbroke with tradition and opted for a neat modern floral bouquet for her marriage to Prince William.
Former royal brides including Princess Diana opted for a larger shower bouquet - with the flowers trailing down the front of the bride's dress.
Kate's simple yet elegant bouquet was designed by Shane Connolly - a florist based in Kensington - and included myrtle, lily-of-the-valley, hyacinth and Sweet William.
The flowers were chosen for their meaning and their significance to the Royal Family, the Middleton family and with a nod to the language of flowers.
Lily-of-the-valley signifies a return of happiness, hyacinth means constancy of love and ivy is for fidelity.
Sweet William stands for gallantry - and, of course, was added to celebrate the groom.
Kate's bouquet is also believed to have contained stems from a myrtle planted by Queen Victoria in 1845, as well as a sprig from the myrtle used in the Queen's wedding bouquet of 1947.

Look away now, Chelsy Davy! Prince Harry 'flirts' with Pippa Middleton at the Royal Wedding
Prince Harry and Chelsy Davy's relationship has been very on and off

Prince Harry and Pippa Middleton ? the next royal romance?
Chelsy Davy was watching from the pews as boyfriend Prince Harry followed just-married Prince William and Kate Middleton down the aisle at Westminster Abbey.
And she might have been better to have looked away.
The cheeky Prince, who was Best Man to brother Wills at today's Royal Wedding, laughed and joked with Maid Of Honour Pippa Middleton, 27, as they walked arm-in-arm at the end of the ceremony.
The pair whispered to each other and couldn't stop grinning - perhaps in anticipation of tonight's reception at Buckingham Palace, where Harry's sure to embarrass Will with his speech.
Zimbabwe-born Chelsy, 25 - who has been dating Harry, 26, on and off for a number of years - chose a turquoise Alberta Ferretti mini-skirt and off-the-shoulder top for the event.
But it seemed Harry's eyes were all on Pippa, who wore a classy ivory full-length silk gown to perfectly complement her sister's lace retro-style Sarah Burton wedding dress.

Nick Cannon: Pregnant Mariah Carey is 'ready to pop'
Matt Sayles/AP
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their twins - a boy and a girl.Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey are expecting a special delivery any day now -- their twins!
"We were going to go to the hospital last night actually," Cannon said while guest-co-hosting "The Talk" Thursday.
Carey, who is "ready to just pop," has her bags all packed for the trip and a baby nurse ready to help out.
"I don't know why I'm here," Cannon quipped.
The father-to-be said he tends to be a "daredevil" but the prospect of having to be a parent soon has him rethinking his adventurous ways.
Just a week ago, he said, he was up in a hot air balloon for an "America's Got Talent" segment, which made him think, "I can't do this anymore."
PHOTOS: CELEBRITIES WHO FLAUNT THEIR BABY BUMPS
"I gotta start taking into consideration that I have other lives that I am responsible for," Cannon said.
The couple will celebrate its third anniversary on Saturday, but won't be able to renew their vows in an exotic locale as they have the last two years.
"I'm not trying to be a psychic..." Cannon said. "It's probably going to be in the hospital this year. I think we are going to renew our vows in the hospital."
A combined anniversary and birthday? Special indeed!

According to the father-to-be, things are rough between the two of them currently. ?I?m going through a really tough time right now. I have ended things with Angelina.?
And it sounds like the problem was infidelity. David added, ?I got a text from a fire fighter who actually apologized for sleeping with Angelina saying he just found out she was engaged.?
Kovacs also noted, ?I actually found a pair of guy?s underwear in her car. I truly fell in love with this girl and wanted to have a family and grow old with her.?

Fresh off of her big baby news, January Jones showed off her still-small baby bump while out in Hollywood, CA on Friday (April 29).
The pregnant "Mad Men" actress dropped off her ride to valet personnel as she met up with actress Jennifer Carpenter for a relaxing lunch at the Sunset Tower Hotel.
As previously reported by GossipCenter, Miss Jones' rep told People magazine on the baby-on-the-way on Thursday night, "January Jones is happy to announce that she is expecting her first child this fall."
Now speculation as to the father has become the subject of interest, as January split from boyfriend Jason Sudeikis early this year.

Santa Clarita Valley churches ready to assemble 1 million meals for the poor
Pastor Brandon Beard holds a meal in a trailer containing 35,000 pounds of rice at the Real Life Church in Santa Clarita as part of the SCV Million Meal Marathon. Real Life Church is among 13 Santa Clarita churches that are going to pack and ship 1 million meals this Sunday to send to hungry kids in Haiti and Africa. (Hans Gutknecht/Staff Photographer)
Forget the sermons this Sunday.
For some Santa Clarita churches, the message will be sent through the actions of assembling 1 million meals bound for hungry children around the world.
The Santa Clarita Valley Million Meal Marathon will employ thousands of volunteers at 13 churches to put together dried-food packages that will be shipped overseas on Monday.
"I've traveled all over the world in different countries. I've seen a lot of hurt. A lot of suffering - mostly kids," said the Rev. Brandon Beard of Real Life Church, who is overseeing the event. "They need help."
It was the nondenominational Valencia church that helped recruit a dozen other congregations to work in unison to mix, bag, box, decorate and ship the million meals.
Each dinner will include a sealed, ready-to-cook bag of rice, lentils, spices and chicken powder, which can serve as a base for indigenous ingredients.
Each dinner costs a quarter.
And each will feed 2,739 kids and parents every day for a year in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and impoverished nations across Africa.
"It's in my heart - love - for feeding people who are less fortunate," said Duane Williams, 51, a Real Life churchgoer from Saugus who
will help load four, 40-foot cargo containers. At the heart of the massive meal ticket, Beard said, is a church-supported Children of Nations missionary group, which has founded self-sustaining orphanages, schools and social services around the world.
Last year, the church packed a container of 16,000 items to help the needy at a Children of Nations site in Uganda. Then on Labor Day, volunteers prepared 100,000 meals for a million-meal trial run.
Rather than attending religious services on Sunday, some 3,000 volunteers will work in three shifts to form meal-making and packing assembly lines.
And that's only at Real Life Church, which has a goal of packing 175,000 pounds of lentils, rice and fixings.
Similar efforts will be made at Living Grace Christian Fellowship, Burning Bush Church, Christ Lutheran Church, the Church on the Way Santa Clarita, Desert Streams Church, Heart of the Canyons Church, Higher Vision Church, NorthPark Community Church, Valencia Hills Community church, Valencia United Methodist Church and the Sanctuary and Royal Oaks Foursquare Church.
The massive charity event cost more than $250,000, all covered by donations. Similar outreach goes to help local and national residents in need.
"I feel it's something I need to do. It's the right thing to do," said volunteer Stephanie Hobbs, 39, of Castaic, who will help sell bowl-and-spoon kits and vitamins to accompany the grub. "We take so much for granted.
"Something as simple as a spoon can mean the world."
Beard said that the marathon effort has unified churches across the Santa Clarita Valley. And that it's vital the Christian message be accompanied by kindness.
"I'm pumped, so pumped," said Beard, the Real Life executive pastor of outreach. "There's no sermon this weekend. This is the sermon, this is the message: To show God's love in a practical way."

Tika Sumpter Shows Off Fit Body For Esquire Magazine [PHOTOS]
Tika Sumpter has caught the eye of men?s magazine Esquire who asked her to pose for their ?Me and My Place? shoot. The 28-year-old actress (currently of ?Gossip Girl? and ?One Life To Live? fame and soon to appear in Captain America) talks her apartment, body image, and lingerie.

Who Looked Sexiest At OK! Magazine?s ?Sexy Singles? Party? [PHOTOS]
On being sexy:
When you?re comfortable in your skin and you?re comfortable in what you?re wearing, sexiness just ? it oozes out.
On her favorite lingerie:
I love any kind of boy shorts. They make every girl?s legs look amazing and their butts look great. I walk around my house like that anyway ? kind of like nothing. If I could walk around like that everyday outside, I would.
On sexier lingerie:
I mean, I do have sexy stuff. But I?ve tried that for somebody else, and I was like, ?What am I doing?? You put on the black lace thigh-highs and the little tiny stuff that connects with other things and you?re like, ?How does this even go? How do I put this on?? So you wear the heels and you walk in the room. You?re trying to be all sexy, but you?re so uncomfortable. And then you pop him in the face with it. It?s a mess.
On her apartment:
I live by myself. I come in the door, I can throw my stuff on the floor. I can leave the dishes. I can have wine. Nobody is telling me to turn down the TV or, Okay, let?s go to bed. I just do what I want, when I want, and I love that. It?s like my own kingdom, you know? But I?m weird. I love to clean my apartment, like, all the time.
On her decorations:
The racing helmet? It?s on my book shelf. To let everybody know that I?m a bit of a crazy girl. I?ll try anything once. It?s always good to see peoples? faces surprised ? surprised that I race, or that I surf, that I trekked through the Himalayas. As long as I don?t die, I?m good.
Who knew she had such a sick body?! Props.

The Hangover 2 Producers Sued For Mike Tyson Face Tattoo Ripoff
If you've seen The Hangover, you know Mike Tyson has a small, but pivotal and hilarious role. He's not in the sequel, but if you've seen The Hangover 2 previews, you know his infamous face tattoo is - when Ed Helms wakes up with it.
The guy who tattooed Tyson in real life years ago is unamused.
The Hangover 2 Clip - Where Are We?
S. Victor Whitmill claims he created AND copyrighted the tat he affixed to Mike Tyson's face in 2003, and is suing Warner Bros. in federal court.
Whitmill says he's never allowed anyone to use the image and that the studio violated his copyright by using it on a hung over Helms in the film.
In addition to wanting the scenes cut from the film (don't bet on it) Whitmill is also demanding a cash settlement of an undisclosed amount.
No comment yet from Tyson, who remains certifiably nuts for having that design - however artistic - tattooed on his face. His face.

Kate Middleton Debuts Second Wedding Dress as New Round of Partying Begins!
They did. Now they dance.
After taking a much-needed break from their oh-so-public big day, Prince William and Kate Middleton?or the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, as they're now so known?finally emerged from St. James Palace relaxed, recharged and, most importantly as far as we're concerned, redressed, debuting their second (for Kate) and third (believe it or not, for Wills) new outfits of the day.
The couple, flanked by Prince Charles, Camilla Parker Bowles, Prince Harry and a few other members of the royal wedding party, were making their way back to Buckingham Palace for the second, far more intimate and laid-back of their receptions. So what, oh what, did Kate wear this time around?
Listen. When something works, you stick with it. Which is why it's not exactly surprising that Kate once again chose to step out in a Sarah Burton-designed Alexander McQueen creation.
This time around, she once again chose to wear an all-white outfit, and worked a strapless satin gazar evening dress with a circle skirt and diamante embroidered detail around the waist. She topped it off with a white angora bolero cardigan.
Kate's hairdo also went through a subtle change for the nighttime reception?gone was the demi-chignon half updo (and the diamond tiara) and in its stead was Kate in her most natural state?with free-flowing loose curls.
As for the boys, William, Harry and Charles each wore classic dinner jackets with basic black bowties, while Camilla opted for a light blue hand-embroidered, high-collared floor length Anna Valentine dress. Caftan chic at its finest, we say.
The Middleton family also made their way over to Buckingham Palace for the evening reception, albeit traveling from the Goring Hotel, not from Clarence House. They, too, had changed attire, with Pippa Middleton opting to wear her hair up this time around (actually, she seems to have opted for Kate's wedding style), along with custom Temperley London design: a long emerald green sleeveless dress with plunging neckline and jeweled embellishment. Mother Carole donned a black cap sleeve dress with a tiered skirt, and the Middleton men?brother James and father Michael?stuck with the traditional black tuxes and bow ties.
Tonight's reception, which was scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. London time (and for which the royal party left just minutes before), will be a much more relaxed party for the couple. Dinner and dancing are expected to take place, as a dance floor has been constructed specially for the occasion.
Helping relieve a bit of the stress for the guests is the fact that the queen will not be in attendance at this reception. So we're guessing any lingering toasts (and there are expected to be quite a few) will lean to the slightly more bawdy side of things. While both Prince Charles and Harry spoke of their brother at the earlier, 650-strong reception this afternoon, Harry's official best man speech is expected to be given tonight. So here's hoping William brought a hat.
The reception is expected to last well into the night, and will take place primarily in the grand ballroom of Buckingham Palace. However, guests will also be allowed to mingle in the opened-up white drawing room, music room, blue drawing room, state dining room and picture gallery of the palace.
Incidentally, Kate and Will's departure from St. James Palace marks their last public appearance of the day, as they will spend their first night as a married couple together at Buckingham Palace.
Though they might not make it to bed until the early morning hours. While the day has no doubt already proven a long one for the excited newlyweds, a third reception (or the second leg of the second reception, depending on how you look at it) will continue on as some of the, ahem, elder members of the party retire for the evening.
Some of the more, let's say festive-loving, members of Wills' social circle will be present at tonight's reception and aren't likely to be too eager to call it an early night, among them nightclub owner (and reputed bachelor party co-organizer) Guy Pelly and Thomas van Straubenzee, both of whom are rumored to have been involved in the so-called "wedmin" of the event.
Not to mention, Harry apparently has some big plans for tomorrow morning's breakfast, planning a 6 a.m. greasy feast for those wedding survivors who put in an all-nighter. There's still no word on when (or where!) Will and Kate will depart on their honeymoon, though they could (and indeed are expected to) leave as early as tomorrow.

Kate and William Get New Titles: Presenting the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (and More)!
Queen Elizabeth wasn't messing around.
About 20 minutes ahead of schedule on the morning of her grandson's nuptials, Britain's reigning monarch bestowed new titles on her grandson, Prince William, and his bride-to-be, Kate Middleton.
And wait till you hear 'em...
WATCH NOW! Our livestream of the royal wedding
William, who is still a prince, of course, will now also be His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus. (That last one is real, we promise!)
Kate, meanwhile, is now Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge. And she'll technically be the Princess of Wales, but will not be addressed as such.
Queen Elizabeth had been expected to give William both English and Scottish titles. According to the statement issued by the queen's press secretary, his earldom dates back to 1357, when Robert Stewart, the High Steward of Scotland, was created Earl of Strathearn, but no one has held the title since 1943.
In case the name "Carrickfergus" didn't tip you off, the barony is Irish and dates back to 1625.
Congratulations to the now veddy official-sounding couple!

Michael Giltz: Movie Review: Herzog's Captivating "Cave Of Forgotten Dreams"
CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS *** 1/2 out of ****
Select Theaters
I'm writing this sentence in the year 2011. Now imagine that someone came along in the year 7011 (some five thousand years later) and added this second sentence. Then the two sentences sit there side by side until the year 32,011 when we come along and see those sentences for the first time. That's the span of eons we have to grasp when watching this bewitching film.
It's a documentary by the great and eccentric Werner Herzog -- shot in 3-D no less -- that explores a recently discovered cave in France. Cave Of Forgotten Dreams reveals a space filled with drawings some 25,000 to 32,000 years old that ranks as one of the great cultural and archeological finds of all time. The cave is off limits to absolutely everyone except for rare visits by scientists.
But Herzog being Herzog, he is rightly given some brief hours to document the find. The result is more focused than his recent marvelous documentary Encounters At The End Of The World but it's a marvel nonetheless. And the usage of 3-D is spectacular: you want to reach out and stroke the walls again and again. A hush fell over the crowd watching this film as we absorbed the images: a herd of horses galloping across one wall, the palm print of one visitor appearing over and over at the entrance and at various points throughout the caves like a prehistoric display of tagging, not to mention the sheer beauty of the space itself.
Herzog asks his usual philosophical, probing questions that elicit unexpected remarks from the scientists. But his masterstroke was commissioning the perfect score by Ernst Reijseger, which is angular and haunting, celestial and ancient, religious and earthy all at once. The postscript wanders off to a nearby sanctuary where albino alligators are spawned in the warm waters tossed off by a nuclear reactor and I don't quite get the connection. But Herzog is always looking for those connections or just taking in the world in wide-eyed wonder and he is the perfect tour guide for this rare glimpse at the past. An experience.

Lakers Eliminate Hornets, Win Game 6 98-80
NEW ORLEANS ? Andrew Bynum used his massive frame to own the lane, Kobe Bryant made timely shots that silenced a hostile crowd, and the Los Angeles Lakers started to look a lot more like a team trying to win a third straight NBA title.
Bryant scored 22 of his 24 points in the first three quarters, then let his teammates take over in a dominant 98-80 victory over the New Orleans Hornets on Thursday night that wrapped up a first-round playoff series triumph for Los Angeles in six games.
The performance left coach Phil Jackson saying his current squad has the "potential to be as good as any team I've coached with the Lakers."
He might have sounded silly saying that after Game 4, when Chris Paul's triple-double helped the Hornets tie the series at two, but it's not like championship Lakers teams have never started slow before.
They split their first four playoff games with Oklahoma City last season before winning that series 4-2 and moving on to eventually win the franchise's 16th NBA title. This time, they turned in convincing double-digit victories in the last two games, winning by 16 on Tuesday night and leading by as much as 21 in the fourth quarter of the series clincher.
"We're good at making adjustments and learning," Bryant said. "So the more a series goes on, the more we learn. That comes from our coaching staff. That comes from us and the amount of experience we have, being able to pick teams apart the later we go in a series."
The Lakers move on to the second round, facing the Dallas Mavericks, who eliminated Portland in six games. Game 1 will be Monday at Staples Center.
The 7-foot, 285-pound Bynum had 18 points and 12 rebounds, drawing groans from the New Orleans crowd with each of his eight offensive rebounds. His ability to clean up teammates' misses and extend possessions helped Los Angeles gain a lopsided 21-4 advantage in second-chance points.
"Every time he got an offensive rebound, it was deflating," Hornets coach Monty Williams said. "You don't really realize how good he is until you face him in a series. Kobe's Kobe, but I thought Bynum decided the series. He was that good."
Pau Gasol chipped in 16 points and Lamar Odom 14 for the Lakers, whose overpowering fourth quarter provided an anticlimactic ending to what had initially been a more exciting series than many expected ? particularly with the Hornets having lost leading scorer David West to a season-ending injury in late March.
Paul, who helped the Hornets split the first four games with two sensational performances, wasn't able to deliver a third victory. He had only seven points before hitting a 3-pointer with 4:02 to go and finished with 10 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds.
"Once we started missing shots, the lane became filled with Laker jerseys, and to ask Chris to bail us out of a game like that is unfair," Williams said. "They're the champs and they know how to put the pedal to the medal ? and they did."
As they did in Game 5, the Lakers again controlled the paint, outrebounding New Orleans 43-30, including 14 offensive rebounds.
"We just lost to a really, really good team. It's obvious why they're the two-time defending champs," Paul said. "They did a really good job of closing the lane down. ... I still tried to find my spots, but the lane was packed."
The Lakers led by double digits throughout the fourth quarter, and Williams finally conceded the game with about a minute to go when he removed the starters, who received an appreciative standing ovation from the sellout crowd in the New Orleans Arena.
Carl Landry had 19 points for the Hornets, who have not won a playoff series since the first round in 2008, but who did better than expected this season after Williams took his first head coaching job last summer with a team that had missed the playoffs last season. Trevor Ariza scored 12 points for New Orleans and Marco Belinelli 11.
After falling behind by as many as 12 points in the middle of the third quarter, New Orleans was as close as 54-48 when Jason Smith hit a jumper. But Bryant and Gasol each hit a pair of free throws to get Los Angeles' lead back to 10, and each time the Hornets tried to claw back after that, the Lakers had an answer.
When Willie Green hit a 3 to make it 60-53, Bryant came right back with a 3 of his own and put his finger to his lips as the crowd quieted again.
Then late in the quarter, Paul lost the ball under his own basket when he bumped into Ron Artest and tumbled over the baseline, hoping to draw a foul. Instead, Artest put in an easy layup and flexed both biceps while the crowd booed the officials in frustration.
The boos continued when Smith fouled Bryant hard on a drive and was called for a flagrant foul. After conspicuously applauding the call, to the annoyance of Hornets fans, Bryant made both free throws, giving the Lakers a 69-57 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Hornets needed a strong start to the fourth quarter and it appeared they might make one more run when Paul promptly found Smith for an open jumper to make it 69-59. Yet the Lakers again denied the Hornets any momentum as Odom responded with a 3 and Bynum scored inside on a possession kept alive by an offensive rebound. That ignited a 9-0 run that made it 78-59 with 8:28 left.
The game was never in doubt after that.
"The size and depth of our team wore them down in the end," Jackson said. "It took us a little time to figure out this team."

Tornadoes devastate South, killing at least 248

PLEASANT GROVE, Ala. - Dozens of tornadoes ripped through the South, flattening homes and businesses and killing at least 248 people in six states in the deadliest outbreak in nearly 40 years.
As day broke Thursday, people in hard-hit Alabama surveyed flattened, debris-strewn neighborhoods and told of pulling bodies from rubble after the storms passed Wednesday afternoon and evening.
"It happened so fast it was unbelievable," said Jerry Stewart, a 63-year-old retired firefighter who was picking through the remains of his son's wrecked home in Pleasant Grove, a suburb of Birmingham. "They said the storm was in Tuscaloosa and it would be here in 15 minutes. And before I knew it, it was here."
He and his wife, along with their daughter and two grandchildren, survived by hiding under their front porch. Friends down the street who did the same weren't so lucky - Stewart said he pulled out the bodies of two neighbors whose home was ripped off its foundation.
Alabama's state emergency management agency said it had confirmed 162 deaths, while there were 32 in Mississippi, 32 in Tennessee, 13 in Georgia, eight in Virginia and one in Kentucky.
President Barack Obama said he would visit Alabama Friday to view damage and meet with the governor and families devastated by the storms. Obama has already expressed condolences by phone to Gov. Robert Bentley and approved his request for emergency federal assistance.
The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center
in Norman, Okla., said it received 137 tornado reports into Wednesday night. The storms forced authorities in some places into makeshift command posts after their headquarters lost power or were damaged, and an Alabama nuclear plant was using backup generators to cool units that were shut down. Some of the worst damage was in Tuscaloosa, a city of more than 83,000 that is home to the University of Alabama. Neighborhoods there were leveled by a massive tornado caught on video by a tower-mounted news camera that barreled through late Wednesday afternoon.
"When I looked back, I just saw trees and stuff coming by," said Mike Whitt, a resident at DCH Regional Medical Center who ran from the hospital's parking deck when the wind started swirling and he heard a roar.
On Thursday morning, he walked through the neighborhood next to the hospital, home to a mix of students and townspeople, looking at dozens of homes without roofs. Household items were scattered on the ground - a drum, running shoes, insulation, towels, and a shampoo bottle. Streets were impassable, the pavement strewn with trees, pieces of houses and cars with their windows blown out.
Dr. David Hinson was working at the hospital when the tornado hit. He and his wife had to walk several blocks to get to their house, which was destroyed. Several houses down, he helped pull three students from the rubble. One was dead and two were badly injured. He and others used pieces of debris as makeshift stretchers to carry them to an ambulance.
"We just did the best we could to get them out and get them stabilized and get them to help," he said. "I don't know what happened to them."
Back from an aerial tour Thursday morning, Tuscaloosa Mayor Walter Maddox said the tornado tore a streak of "utter destruction" through the city. There were at least 36 people dead in the city's police jurisdiction, and searches continue for the missing.
"We have neighborhoods that have been basically removed from the map," he said.
Because the city's emergency management building was destroyed, authorities are using Bryant-Denny Stadium at the University of Alabama as a command post.
University officials said there didn't appear to be significant damage on campus, and dozens of students and locals were staying at a 125-bed shelter in the campus recreation center.
The storm system spread destruction from Texas to New York, where dozens of roads were flooded or washed out. The governors of Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia issued emergency declarations for parts of their states.
Dave Imy, a meteorologist with the prediction service, said the deaths were the most since a tornado outbreak killed 315 people in 1974.

The storm also forced the Browns Ferry nuclear power plant about 30 miles west of Huntsville to shut down its three units because of damage to the utility's transmission lines, the Tennessee Valley Authority said. Diesel generators were being used to cool the reactors. The safety systems operated as needed and the emergency event was classified as the lowest of four levels, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission said.
The storms came on the heels of another system that killed 10 people in Arkansas and one in Mississippi earlier this week. Less than two weeks earlier, a smaller batch of twisters raced through Alabama, touching off warning sirens, damaging businesses and downing power lines in Tuscaloosa, but there were no deaths there then.
In Smithville in northeastern Mississippi, the police station, post office, city hall, an industrial park with several furniture manufacturing facilities and a grocery store were among dozens of buildings ripped apart. A church was cut in half, and pieces of tin were wrapped high around the legs of a blue water tower.
Jessica Monaghan, 24, walked through the wreckage with her 9-month-old son, Slade Scott, strapped to her back, and the baby's father, 23-year-old Tyler Scott, by her side.
Their house was still standing, though the home belonging to Tyler Scott's mother was flattened. He was at work - he's a firefighter in nearby Tupelo - and Monaghan was at home watching TV when broadcasters warned the town could be hit within 10 minutes. By then, she said, the storm was there.
"The baby was already in the closet. I grabbed the cat and got in the closet, too," Monaghan said. "You could just feel the pressure. It really was like a freight train."
And in Pleasant Grove, Samantha Nail surveyed the damage in the blue-collar subdivision where hers was the only home still intact. The storm slammed heavy pickup trucks into ditches and obliterated tidy brick houses, leaving behind a mess of mattresses, electronics and children's toys scattered across a grassy plain where dozens used to live.
"We were in the bathroom holding on to each other and holding on to dear life," Nail said. "If it wasn't for our concrete walls, our home would be gone like the rest of them."
Reeves reported from Tuscaloosa. Associated Press Writers Holbrook Mohr in Smithville, Miss.; Anna McFall and John Zenor in Montgomery; Meg Kinnard in Colombia, S.C.; Bill Fuller and Alan Sayre in New Orleans; Dorie Turner in Atlanta; and Bill Poovey in Chattanooga, Tenn., contributed to this report.

Dan Foden: I split with Kerry Katona because her world's too mad
Kerry Katona was previously married to Brian McFadden and Mark Croft
Dan Foden admits he split up with reality star Kerry Katona over Easter because he hated her lifestyle.
Kerry, 30, and Dan first stepped out together last month, but the Take Me Out contestant called time on the relationship because he'd had enough of Kerry's 'showbiz bubble'.
'Kerry's world is just too mad,' says Dan, 28.
The former Atomic Kitten star was hoping he'd be a new father figure to children Molly, 9, Lily Sue, 8, Heidi, 4, and Max, 3 - but Dan just wanted to date, he didn't feel ready to play dad.
'Kerry's always been desperate for a strong family unit,' says Now's source.
'Especially with her ex Mark Croft being as erratic as he is.'
Now, despite their brief liaison, Dan's hoping for a career in the media.
'He's told friends he wants to get modelling and personal appearance work and maybe a column,' reveals our insider.
'He keeps talking about how Alex Reid raised his profile during his marriage to Jordan.'

Steven Tyler Was 'Snorting Everything' 3 Years Ago
Aerosmith lead singer turned 'American Idol' judge Steven Tyler struck a candid pose with two magazines this week. The 63-year-old rock star didn't hold back about his renewed image (thanks, 'Idol'!) or his struggles to get sober in interviews with both PEOPLE and Rolling Stone.
"I'm on top of the world. I'm Hollywood's little f***in' sweetheart, basically," Tyler told Rolling Stone. In a cover story for the magazine, Tyler acknowledged that he took the 'Idol' job -- which has proven to be quite the smart career move -- as a response to his bandmates trying to get rid of him.
"F**k yeah. Not to show them, but that I can't be held hostage anymore. I will be my own hostage. The band can't throw me out."
In that same interview, Tyler spoke in rich tones of getting high with another aging rock star, Joe Perry, in 2008 while they were trying to record an Aerosmith album together.
"Joe was high and he couldn't play," he said. "I couldn't sing, really, because I was snorting everything, and it f---- up your throat."
Tyler, who has a long history of hard core partying, has been sober for a year and half now after. He has made eight trips to rehab over the year and told PEOPLE that he's lucky to be alive.
"Left up to my own devices," he said, "I probably would have been dead several times over."
So is Tyler high on anything right now? Just the excitement of 'Idol,' he said.
"If you think going out in front of high-def cameras and millions of people I'm not high on adrenaline, you're crazy." He went on to say, "I'm stoned when that curtain drops," though he clarified, "I just don't snort the curtain dropping. I don't snort J. Lo either, though I do breathe her in."
Tyler also said he could "use next week" but wouldn't because of how proud he is of all his progress.
Tyler's memoir, 'Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?' will be out May 3.

Despite 'severe' terrorist threat, London police vow safe royal wedding
By Traci Watson, Special for USA TODAY
LONDON ? Despite a terrorist threat officially set at "severe," London police vowed Wednesday that the royal wedding would be a safe and peaceful event for both the wedding party and the thousands of spectators expected to pour into London to cheer Prince William and his new bride.
Police have been planning the security operation ? expected to be one of the biggest in the modern history of London ? since the wedding date was announced. Some 5,000 London police officers will be deployed in the city center, along with sniffer dogs, police horses and members of the armed forces, said Christine Jones, a commander of London's Metropolitan Police.
The police are determined "that this event will pass off peacefully," Jones said. But though she "would so love to say nothing will go wrong ... nobody can ever predict what everyone (at the event) will do."
The terrorist threat in Britain has been set at "severe," the second-most serious level, for months because of the potential for attacks from Middle Eastern radicals and dissident Irish groups. But Jones played down the Internet "chatter" from anarchists and others interested in disrupting the wedding.
There has been "no change at all to the threat assessment in the United Kingdom from either domestic or international terrorism," Jones said. She said one individual ? whose identity has not been divulged ? has filed a formal application for a protest at the wedding. Muslims Against Crusades, a British group known for its provocative stunts, announced Wednesday that it was calling off a planned protest in front of the abbey.
Even so, the authorities are taking no chances. The 1,900 wedding guests ? including royalty and political leaders from around the world ? will be searched and their identities confirmed before they are allowed into Westminster Abbey, where the ceremony will take place. Undercover officers will spread through the crowds watching for trouble. And some of the police officers will be armed, a rare concession in a nation accustomed to unarmed officers.
Jones noted that the attention of the entire world would be focused on London Friday.
"Let's make sure it's focused on the dress," she said with a smile.
