?American Idol (Fox, 8 ET/PT) gets down to business tonight, and quickly, as the top 12 boys sing on the first viewer-vote show ? knowing their numbers will be cut in half by the end of the week.
It's been a promising season so far, with both the contestants and the judges seeming to perform at a much higher level than last year's nadir. But remember, you can bury an awful lot of flaws in a taped show's editing booth. The live shows that begin this week are the test as to whether that promise comes true.
?Of course, Idol's would-be singing stars will be around for quite some time. You have only one night to see the real deal gathered in the East Room, as PBS presents The Motown Sound: In Performance at the White House (8 ET/PT, times may vary).
Among those scheduled to perform are Jamie Foxx, Amber Riley, Smokey Robinson, Seal, Sheryl Crow, Martha Reeves, Stevie Wonder and former Idol winner Jordin Sparks.
